On top of that, we’ll also answer some frequently asked questions.

So shall we?

How to Become an RN in Colorado – The 5 Steps

Here are the 5 steps you need to complete to become an RN in Colorado:

  1. Apply for a nursing program
  2. Apply for an RN license
  3. Register for the NCLEX-RN
  4. Pass the NCLEX-RN
  5. Verify your RN license

Let’s go over the steps one by one.

Step #1: Apply for a Nursing Program

For any aspiring nurse, the first step is always education and training.

Now, for aspiring RNs in Colorado, you have 2 nursing education programs to choose from – ADN or BSN.

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is a 2-year program that teaches you how to do basic health procedures, record-keeping, and management.

For most ADN program providers, you only need a highschool diploma to qualify. Pretty simple, right?

On the other hand, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a 4-year program that teaches you ADN topics, plus courses in public health management, medical practice, and so much more.

Although longer, more expensive, and harder to get in, a BSN degree promises higher average salaries. To add to that, a good number of hospitals and other companies prefer RNs who graduate with a BSN degree.

It’s up to YOU to decide which degree you want.

Step #2: Apply for an RN License

Once you complete your nursing program, you can now apply for a Colorado RN license.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Create an account with the Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations Online Services.
  • Apply for a new RN license:
    • Fill in the necessary information
    • Answer questions about your nursing program
    • Answer questions about criminal history
    • Provide all required documents including background check and proof of nursing program completion
    • Pay the $88 application fee
  • Submit your application and wait for approval.

License by Endorsement

If you’re already a licensed RN from another state that is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), you can simply use your current license to work in Colorado.

If you’re from a state not part of the NLC, then you can apply for a Colorado RN license through endorsement.

You only need to submit your credentials, transcripts, and background information.

The best part is that you can submit it online here. Create an account and choose the option to apply for a license by endorsement. The application fee is $90.

Step #3: Register for the NCLEX-RN

At the same time you submit your RN application, you should also apply for the NCLEX-RN.

In Colorado, this exam is administered by Pearson Vue.

Here’s how to register:

  • Go to the NCLEX website and click ‘Register Now’.
  • You will be directed to Pearson Vue, where you will need to create an account.
  • Provide all the necessary information and documents.
  • Pay the $200 exam fee.

When that’s done, Pearson Vue will send your registration to the Colorado Board of Nursing. Once your RN application is approved and the Board gets acknowledgement of NCLEX-RN registration, you will be given an Authorization to Test (ATT).

Step #4: Pass the NCLEX-RN

Once you receive your Authorization to Test (ATT), schedule an exam appointment here

What can you expect from the NCLEX-RN?

You’ll have to take it with a computer. Don’t worry, you’re given time to test it before the exam begins.

The number of questions varies, but there will be at least 75 items. The maximum number of questions is 265.

You are given 5 hours to complete everything, with 2 breaks in between (if you need them).

You need to have a passing score to get your Colorado RN license.

Step #5: Verify Your RN License

The last step is to verify your RN license. Simply go to Nursys’ QickConfirm License Verification, type in your name, license number, OR NCSBN number.

From there, follow the online prompts to verify your RN license.

YAY! You’re now an official registered nurse in Colorado.

Congratulations!
