Then you’re in the right place. In this article, we’re going to talk about how to become a CNA in Maine. We’ve also added a few FAQs at the end for related questions about being a CNA.

So if you’re ready, let’s get started.

How to Become a CNA in Maine

The 180-hour training requirement might have scared you, but apart from that, the whole CNA application is easy.

The whole process of  becoming a CNA in Maine only takes three steps:

  1. Enroll in a state-approved CNA training program
  2. Pass the Maine CNA Competency Exam
  3. Submit a CNA application form

We’ve detailed all you need to know about each step in the following sections.

Step 1: Enroll in a State-Approved Nurse Aide Training Program

The very first thing to do is to complete a state-approved CNA training program. To be eligible to enroll in a nursing program, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be 16 years old and above
  • Pass an English reading test to check for the English proficiency level
  • Be able to write in English
  • Show proof that you have passed 9th grade or a GED completion
  • Complete a physical exam
  • Submit to a drug test
  • Pass documentation on all immunizations taken
  • Pass the criminal background check

The criminal background check is usually done on the first day of your training program. This background check is administered by the Maine State Bureau of Identification.

Maine’s CNA program takes 180 hours with half (90 hours) focusing on classroom instruction. Another 70 hours are allotted to clinical practice and the remaining 20 hours are for laboratory exercises. The training program can be completed in about 4-12 weeks.

If you want to work while studying, CNAs-in-training are allowed to work at a nursing facility, provided that they can only work for a maximum of four months. The Maine Registry for Certified Nursing Assistants and Direct Care Workers must also receive documentation indicating that you are in a training program.

While it’s hard enough to complete the 180-hour program, working at a nurse facility can also be a good choice especially if you want to earn on the side.

Step 2: Pass the Maine CNA Competency Exam

As with any nursing profession, you should be able to show competency and skill before you get your CNA certification.

The Maine CNA Competency Exam is taken at any career and technical education center and will consist of two parts: the written portion and the skills portion.

The written exam is a multiple-choice type with 60 questions. To pass this portion, you need to answer 72% of the questions correctly. It will only include topics that are part of your nursing assistant training program.

On the other hand, the skills exam is a 10-task exam. The examiner will ask you to demonstrate several nurse aide tasks step-by-step. To pass, you need to be able to get 7 out of 10 tasks correctly.

Only when you pass these two exams will you be allowed to pass an application form to become a CNA in Maine.

Step 3: Submit a CNA Application Form

Congratulations on passing your CNA exam!

Once you get your results, you can fill up this form in order to be listed as part of the Maine Registry of Certified Nursing Assistants.

Apart from the application form, you need to submit these additional documents:

  • A copy of your CNA Certificate of Training
  • A copy of any official government ID that has your photo and signature; student IDs are not accepted
  • A copy of your criminal background record accomplished during your CNA training

Once you submit these documents to the Maine Registry of CNAs, wait 30 days before your name is shown in the registry.
